New disability group calls for chance to fill jobs gap

A new body representing people with disabilities has said its members should be offered the opportunity to help fill the skills gap in Irish industry.

The group - People with Disabilities in Ireland - said Ireland was failing to meet international commitments to provide proper training.

It wants the Government, the employer’s bodies and the trade unions to work together to tackle the issue.

PwDI said people with disabilities must be trained for the new high-tech industries and not confined to the traditional wood and metal workshops.

The group has itself launched a new training manual which is aimed at developing each individual’s personal confidence, assertiveness skills and employment options.
