Warning over industry skills shortages

A lot of industries are suffering skill shortages because they are perceived as being predominantly male or female or low paid, the chairman of an Assembly committee said today.

Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment Committee chairman Esmond Birnie said textiles, hotel and construction representatives who had testified at their inquiry into education and training were anxious to address image problems in their industries.
