Factory closures and the foot-and-mouth crisis have led to an increase in the numbers on the live register, with figures released today showing 136,561 people are signing on.

Factory closures and the foot-and-mouth crisis have led to an increase in the numbers on the live register, with figures released today showing 136,561 people are signing on.

The figure for the end of April shows a rise of 676 on the previous month, and when seasonally adjusted displays an even bigger jump of over 1,700.
