Fine Gael has called on the government to convene an immediate meeting of the social partners to find a way through the impasse with the ASTI.

The party's education spokesman Michael Creed said that last night's narrow vote in favour of rejecting the Labour Court proposals showed that there are moderate elements within the union seeking to reposition its demands.
