Carthy inquiry may be abandoned

The future of the Dail sub-committee inquiry into the death of John Carthy was been thrown into doubt.

The committee has spent two and a half hours in private session to consider objections raised by lawyers from opposing sides about procedures.

Counsel for members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit, John Rodgers SC, has claimed the inquiry does not have the power to question gardai.

He said only a judge or a court can carry out such tasks.

Meanwhile, counsel for the Carthy family, Michael O'Higgins SC, said 'strictures' were being imposed upon lawyers at the tribunal.

He said the Carthy family was prepared to walk out if any further conditions were introduced.
