150 jobs are to go at one of the West's top electronic components companies.

Castlebar-based Volex Interconnect Systems are temporarily releasing 20% of the staff as part of a Europe-wide belt-tightening drive, including Croatia and Estonia.

Volex manufactures cable assembly systems for leading communications companies Nortel, Cisco and Lucent, and has had its European base in Castlebar since 1992.

680 other posts at the plant will be unaffected.
