Teachers likely to spurn Labour Court package

Delegates at the ASTI's convention in Galway are poised to recommend a rejection of the Labour Court package aimed at ending the teacher's dispute.

A motion on whether the union's leadership should recommend the refusal of the court's clarified proposals is likely to be carried, with obvious implications for next week's ballot of the ASTI's 17,000 members.

Two other motions on the union's strategy should rejection occur are also up for debate.

The first - a renewed ban on work for this year's State exams - is seen as likely to fail, while a proposal to begin all-out strikes in autumn may carry.

Meanwhile, a representative from the National Parents Council has filed an official complaint that he was physically assaulted by a teacher in the early hours of this morning.

NPC Press Officer Pat Herlihy, who is attending the conference, alleged he was approached by a teacher who punched him at around 1am.
