Hospital confirms Haughey heart attack

Former Taoiseach Charles Haughey is in a critical but stable condition in a Dublin hospital after suffering a heart attack in the early hours of this morning.

Mr Haughey was taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital at 1am after collapsing at his home in Kinsealy.

The 75-year-old was quickly admitted to the intensive care unit.

In a statement, the hospital said Mr Haughey has a serious life-threatening cardiac condition and has been sedated to allow for ventilation.

He has been ill for some time, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1995.

The hospital plans to issue a further statement on the former Taoiseach's condition later this evening.
