As the country enters a second week of tightening foot and mouth controls, there are hopes Ireland could be declared free of the disease if there are no confirmed outbreaks here before the end of the month.

The controls are not likely to be eased soon however, as the number of cases of the virus in Britain appear to be spiralling out of control.
