The Fine Gael chairman of the party trustees has resigned in the wake of the controversy over the attempted corporate donation of $50,000 by Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor to the party.

Buddy Kiernan stepped down last night as both chairman and as a trustee of the party after it emerged that he was the only member of the trustees who knew that the cheque had been returned to the party by Telenor . This despite Fine Gael's refusal of the donation.

The Board of Trustees was only made aware this week that Telenor did not take back the money.

The Moriarty Tribunal will now decide whether to examine the matter.
