The sword used by actor Mel Gibson in the hit film Braveheart was today bought by Irish financier Dermot Desmond for £116,000 at a charity auction in New York.

The sword used by actor Mel Gibson in the hit film Braveheart was today bought by Irish financier Dermot Desmond for £116,000 at a charity auction in New York.

Gibson donated the five-foot broadsword to a sale to aid a project by the charity Unicef Ireland to help prevent mothers in three African countries passing Aids to their babies.
