Storm over Donegal traveller plans

Donegal County Manager Michael McLoone has caused a storm after announcing details of an emergency plan to accommodate the travelling community.

42 accommodation sites are to be constructed at various locations throughout Donegal, while a further 40 transient sites will be developed.

Despite massive public objections, the controversial plans will go ahead in response to a case brought against the county council in the High Court by the travelling community.

They were protesting that the council were not providing them with adequate accommodation and basic amenities.

Mr McLoone invoked emergency powers under Section 2-10 of the 1995 City and County Management Act, whereby he does not need approval from the public or elected officials for the proposals.
