Police chiefs believe the campaign is being directed by individuals within the UDA rather than it being centrally coordinated, and even though five of the organisation’s six battalions have given up on the peace process, the ceasefire is officially still in place.

The Government is making day-to-day assessments on the state of the truce, but if the attacks continue then the new Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid is bound to come under pressure to declare it at an end.
