Mayo FG branch votes against Bruton

The Mayo branch of Fine Gael has voted by six to one to call for the resignation of John Bruton as party leader.

At an emergency meeting of the constituency organisation last night in Castlebar, chairperson James Waldron said that while delegates appreciated Deputy Bruton's contribution, it was time for him to step down.

Mayo's five Oireachtas representatives will have their say at the parliamentary debate of the motion tomorrow.

TD Enda Kenny has indicated his support for Mr Bruton, while Senator Ernie Caffrey will be voting in favour of his removal.

However, Deputies Jim Higgins and Michael Ring and Senator Paddy Burke have yet to make their position clear.
