Witness breaks down at Gilligan trial

State supergrass Russell Warren broke down and wept in court today while describing the day Veronica Guerin was shot dead.

Warren is giving evidence at the trial of John Gilligan, who is accused of murdering the crime journalist.

The court had to adjourn for five minutes to allow Warren compose himself after he wept under cross-examination by counsel for Mr Gilligan.

Warren said that after the pillion passenger on a motorbike had stopped four cars behind the journalist’s red Opel Calibra at traffic lights, he saw him fire five shots into her car.

When asked how he felt about this he replied: "I was shocked. My stomach was in bits. I just wanted to get out of there."

The trial continues tomorrow.
