Man entered Cork Garda station with knives

Unarmed gardaí talked the man into surrendering two knives and a hammer moments after a garda vehicle was smashed up at Mayfield Station on the northside of Cork City around lunchtime yesterday.

The man, 43, walked into an area to the rear of the station building where all the windows and wing mirrors on a patrol van were damaged.

The man then walked into the station where a knife was produced to the garda on duty in the public office.

A tense stand-off ensued before the man was engaged in negotiation by the public officer and another garda.

They eventually persuaded him to hand over two knives and a hammer.

There were no reported injuries arising out of the incident. The man was arrested and detained at the scene, and was subsequently charged with damage to the garda van and with the possession of knives.

He is due in court this morning charged in connection with the incident.
