Organ donation the ‘ultimate gift’

Heartfelt thanks from people whose loved ones got the ultimate gift — a donated organ — are being used as part of a campaign to boost organ donations.
Organ donation the ‘ultimate gift’

The Irish Kidney Association and Radio Snowflake are asking listeners to give the gift of life this Christmas by supporting organ donation.

Throughout the month, testimonials from those affected will be played on air, thanking their organ donors and their families for giving them the gift of life.

Among the grateful people benefiting from help from the IKA were Colette Fennelly from Bishopstown, Cork, whose husband Don underwent a kidney transplant recently. Colette stayed at the IKA’s Renal Support Centre when Don was undergoing a kidney transplant at Beaumont Hospital in September. It was his second transplant from a deceased organ donor having undergone his first transplant in 2002.

Sarah Dalton said she is grateful for her two kidney transplants since she was diagnosed with problems at the age of six; one at the age of 17 and another from her husband Conor in 2013. The couple have since gone on to have a baby girl, Anabelle: “Anabelle is our miracle baby. I wouldn’t have been able to have children while on dialysis.”

Tadhg McElroy, aged 5, received a transplant from his mother Cliodhna in 2014 after receiving dialysis since he was six months old.

Tadhg’s father Terry said kidney failure has affected their family twice as his own mother, Evelyn, now needs a transplant: “My mother is on the waiting list since October 2016 and needs a kidney from a matching donor to improve her quality of life. Having seen first-hand the difference a kidney transplant makes, I would like to urge everyone to carry a donor card so that other people, including my mother, can be given a chance.”

Throughout the month, listeners will be encouraged to sign up for organ donor cards by either freetexting DONOR to 50050, downloading the donor ecard app on their smartphone, or by ticking their wishes on their driving license application.
