The musical comedy Sing Street, which is set in ’80s Dublin, is shortlisted for best motion picture, comedy or musical.

Fresh from her Vogue cover and appearance on the Late Late Show on Friday, Limerick actress Ruth Negga was nominated for her part in civil rights movie Loving.

Meanwhile, Dubliner Colin Farrell is named in the best actor, comedy or musical category, for his role in The Lobster, which was shot at Parknasilla, Co Kerry.

Caitriona Balfe’s acting in television period drama Outlander was also given a major thumbs up by being included in the best actress, television category.

Sing Street director John Carney said it was a “lovely feeling” for the film to be nominated.

He said he was on the way out to pick up Guinness and whiskey for the Christmas pudding when he got the news.

“It’s just lovely for it to be acknowledged in this way,” he told Ray D’Arcy on his radio show, adding that he hopes the nomination will help spread the word about the film.

“It doesn’t have a hope in hell but just being nominated will absolutely spread the word about the film. It’s a tiny small film that I made in the school I grew up in with a lot of my mates.”
