Keith Brady, aged 28, was yesterday charged with the murder of Martin ‘Matt’ Kivlehan.

His sister Janice, aged 26, was earlier charged with preventing his prosecution for murder.

Mr Kivlehan, aged 59, was stabbed to death last year on August 3 in his apartment in Holborn St, Sligo.

Mr Brady, with an address at Cartron Estate, Sligo, appeared yesterday before Judge Kevin Kilrane at Sligo District Court.

Det Insp Tom Colsh told the judge he charged Mr Brady with murder, and he replied: “I just want to say I’m very sorry for what happened. I never meant anything to happen. To this day, I still don’t know what went wrong.”

Det Insp Colsh asked for a remand in custody to Harristown District Court today while the prosecution prepares the book of evidence.

Judge Kilrane granted legal aid and instructed that addiction and psychiatric assistance be made available to Mr Brady. He remanded him in custody to Harristown District Court today.

Mr Brady’s sister, Janice, also of Cartron Estate, Sligo, was charged in Dublin District Court with impeding the apprehension and prosecution of Keith Brady for murder.

She was also remanded in custody.
