Gardaí had to be called to help hospital medical and security staff after the male patient became extremely agitated in the ED on Saturday afternoon.

One security guard suffered a shoulder injury while helping to restrain the patient as doctors tried to administer injections. Two other security staff suffered minor injuries during the incident. Members of the patient’s family were also called to the hospital.

Gardaí said they will await medical advice and clearance before deciding whether to interview the patient or not, and before a file is prepared for the DPP.

Last month, a nurse suffered a fractured knee when a patient lashed out in the emergency department at Cork’s Mercy University Hospital.
