Defence solicitor Eddie Burke, said at Cork District Court yesterday: “I think the guards knew it was not George W Bush they were dealing with on the night.”

Mr Burke said the accused Graham O’Sullivan, was only talking drivel on the night.

However, Judge John King said that while it might be drivel it was drivel that was happening with some frequency in light of the accused’s list of previous public order convictions.

Mr Burke said, “he does apologise”.

Inspector Bill Duane’s summary of the incident was “he was inviting people in cars to come out and fight him”. Mr Burke said: “I think he was shouting at no one in particular.”

Referring to financial penalties imposed on the accused in the past the judge said, “it is getting to the stage where fines don’t seem to be making any impression on him”.

The judge said the accused could do a community service order of 60 hours instead of six weeks in prison.

O’Sullivan of Lisduff, Whitechurch, Co Cork, pleaded guilty to being threatening and abusive and being drunk and a source of danger on the night.
