An apology was read in the High Court yesterday to the family of the mother of three, Bridget Gillard, aged 51, who died on September 15, 2013.
Her husband, Bobby Gillard, who had continued her legal action, yesterday settled on confidential terms in his case against the HSE and the Mater Hospital in Dublin over his wife’s death.
An apology on behalf of the management and staff of Galway University Hospital staff and the Mater Hosptial, Dublin, was read to the court by HSE counsel Declan Buckley as part of the settlement.
It sincerely apologised for the shortcomings in care provided to Ms Gillard and her untimely death.
It added that the method of treatment of patients has been changed and offered its condolences and regret to the Gillard family for the distress and suffering caused.
Mr Gillard, Rathreedene. Bonniconion, Co Mayo, had sued the HSE and the Mater University Hospital, Dublin, as a result of the way in which his wife’s case was dealt with after a smear test was carried out in 2006.
