In the Seanad yesterday, Ms Noone said the new mobile game Pokémon Go is inspiring “teens to get out of the house and walk”, and added that her Government should seek to financially “support video gaming companies” who create apps that get people exercising.
“Pokémon Go seems to motivate young people, even those who have not been active for some time,” said Ms Noone. “There are cases in the US of previously inactive people getting out and walking for miles to try to increase their Pokémon stash.”
Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Denis O’Donovan jumped into the debate to add that he hoped “Pokémon Go reaches out to older people” as well.
“Ireland is on course to become one of the fattest nations in the world by 2030,” noted Ms Noone.
She added that Pokémon Go and other apps could be a potential solution to tackle this future crisis.
“I hope the Government is quite forward thinking when it comes to something like this in the upcoming budget,” said Ms Noone.
