The allegations related to the period between October 17, 2014, and March 11, 2015, and involved 10 different pharmacies, said Sgt Kieran O’Connell, prosecuting.

The matter came to light when some of the pharmacies became suspicious at the number of requests, Sgt O’Connell said.

Jacinta Bowler, aged 43, of Kilbonane, Beaufort, Killarney, would be pleading guilty, the court was told by her solicitor, Padraig O’Connell. He was seeking an adjournment to allow Ms Bowler to attend for further medical treatment.

“This has occasioned a loss of her job. She could not continue with her work in Cork and Kerry,“ he said.

There were no previous convictions of any kind.

“Why do you need this stuff in the first place?” Judge James O’Connor asked Ms Bowler.

“To sleep. I’m an insomniac,” the woman said, and added she had attended residential treatment and would need continuing treatment.

The judge said it appeared this was a genuine matter and Ms Bowler had tried all orthodox ways of dealing with the situation, without success.

He said he would adjourn the matter to December for a medical report and for a contribution “of a significant nature” to the court poor box.
