David Raymond of 73 Blarney St, Cork, pleaded guilty to several charges yesterday arising out of the incident on September 10, 2015.

Inspector Bill Duane said the incident happened near the Bridewell Garda Station and Raymond, 19, appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant.

The teenager spat at a Garda car in which members of the Regional Support Unit were passengers. He then dropped his trousers and exposed his backside.

Insp Duane said the accused was very abusive to gardaí. As they attempted to deal with the situation Raymond spat at Garda Shane Coakley at he also spat at Sergeant Stewart Philpott.

As Detective Garda Cormac Crotty was arresting Raymond, the accused bit down on his shoulder. The inspector said skin was not broken during this assault.

Frank Buttimer, defence solicitor, said the defendant had been involved in a number of crimes of violence around this time and was keeping bad company.

He was also drinking to excess and taking substances and coming to the attention of gardaí on a consistent basis for a period of about 15 months, Mr Buttimer said. The solicitor said the defendant was effectively barred from Cork city centre and as a term of his bail and had not come to the attention of gardaí for the past few months.

Judge Leo Malone said that on the basis of the evidence in the case the accused was at risk of a prison sentence. However, he said he would seek a pre-sentencing report from the probation report that would include consideration of his suitability for community service.
