Call to fight rise of the far right in Europe and the politics of fear in other parts of the world
The call for increased inclusiveness will be made by the former government minister during a keynote speech at his party’s annual conference in Cork City this evening.
At the end of the two-day event at University College Cork, Mr Ryan — one of the party’s two elected TDs — will say that due to growing global pressures, politicians have an obligation to find solutions by working with each other. Citing the challenges of the growth of the far right in some European countries; Brexit; and the TTIP controversy, he will say there is a clear need for parties to seek out greater democracy and to step away from the politics of fear.
While he is not expected to be mentioned specifically in the speech, the rise of Donald Trump in the US and the potential implications should he win the presidency, are likely to form part of the wider discussion on the issue.
Mr Ryan is also expected to say the “new politics” era which has gained momentum in the aftermath of the February 26 general election, is in reality a back-handed compliment to his own party.
He is expected to say that the sudden conversion of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to the approach means they are acknowledging that the Greens’ long-standing calls for greater cross- party co-operation are correct.
The Green Party conference began last night at the Imperial Hotel, Cork, with a public talk entitled ‘A People’s Republic?’ which focussed on the need to reform local government in Ireland.
Panelists included Dr Theresa Reidy of UCC, Eoin Ryan from Re-imagine Cork, John Handelaar of fixmystreet.ie, and representatives of the Travelling community.
