Irish and international political rivals must work more closely with each other to stave off the rise of the far right in Europe and the politics of fear in other parts of the world, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan will tell party colleagues today.

The call for increased inclusiveness will be made by the former government minister during a keynote speech at his party’s annual conference in Cork City this evening.

At the end of the two-day event at University College Cork, Mr Ryan — one of the party’s two elected TDs — will say that due to growing global pressures, politicians have an obligation to find solutions by working with each other. Citing the challenges of the growth of the far right in some European countries; Brexit; and the TTIP controversy, he will say there is a clear need for parties to seek out greater democracy and to step away from the politics of fear.
