TV3 and RTÉ take extra security measures for Euro 2016
“RTÉ has liaised with the Department of Foreign Affairs on security for staff members travelling to Uefa Euro 2016 in France,” said a spokesman for RTÉ.
He said a special meeting was held last week in the State broadcaster in relation to security measures.
“A security briefing was held last week for those travelling to France. Protocols are in place in the event of any incidents that may occur,” the spokesman told the Irish Examiner.
Meanwhile, TV3 said they are used to the strict Uefa protocols in place since the Paris attacks last November, as the station has covered Champions League games since.
“All our staff and contractors have be briefed and warned to be vigilant,” said a spokesman for TV3.
“The security, from a broadcasting point of view, has been Uefa-led and we are being very compliant with their requests.
“We covered the Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea game in February, and security was very strict so we’ve had the experience of being there from a Champions League point of view,” he added.
Meanwhile, Damien Duff, who would not comment on the security concerns surrounding the championship, believes Ireland can make it to the quarter-finals.
“I think we’ll get out of the group, quarters expecting. Who knows? If you get out of the group, anything can happen,” said the former soccer international.
“You can argue the likes of Belgium, Italy, do they have more quality than the Irish team? You could possibly say yes.
“But do they have our togetherness, our team spirit, are they as proud to pull on their national shirt as the Irish team when we do it? I think that’s a definite no, and I can say that categorically against any country in the world,” he added.
However, he was not as positive about the championship when he reflected on his experience in 2012.
“I’m sure the guys are as confident and optimistic as I was going over to 2012, and we all know how that went,” he said.
