Almost 40,000 “judgment” mortgages have been imposed on members of the public by the courts in the last five years following applications from creditors, figures show.

A creditor to whom money is owed can go to court to seek an order for the debt to be repaid.

The amount of money owed will often decide whether the case comes before a district court, circuit court, or the High Court.
