The Irish Examiner’s graphic tribute to rugby legend Jonah Lomu won the top accolade at the prestigious Institute of Creative Advertising and Design (ICAD) Awards in Dublin last night.

The newspaper carried a front-page image of a leaf falling from the iconic All Blacks’ silver fern over a black background to mark the premature passing of the New Zealand star at the end of last year.

The image, devised by advertising agency Chemistry, was shared by hundreds of thousands of fans around the world and won global praise. Jonah Lomu’s sons Brayley and Dhyreille wore T-shirts bearing the image at a memorial to their father shortly after his death.
