Inquiry into death of pregnant woman at Holles St
Malak Kuzbary Thawley, 34, was pregnant with her first child when she died at the hospital on May 8.
Ms Thawley, who was from Syria, and her husband Alan, who is from the US, had been living and working in Ireland for the past three years.
She was seven weeks pregnant when it was confirmed at a scan at a private clinic that she had an ectopic pregnancy — where the foetus develops outside the womb.
Ms Thawley was advised to attend Holles Street, where she was told she needed immediate surgery. Medical records show that she suffered a “vascular injury” during the surgery and died at 7.57pm. The coroner was notified of the death.
In a statement, the hospital confirmed a maternal death occurred in 2016, but as the case is subject to the coronial process, it could not make any comment.
An internal investigation into the death has been commissioned by the master of Holles Street Hospital.
The case comes just days after the deaths of two babies in Cavan General Hospital on Monday.
