Garda charged with disclosing information and having drugs

Jimell Henry, of Cairns Hills, Sligo, who is the daughter of a retired officer, was charged with seven counts of disclosing information obtained by her in the course of her duties, contrary to the Garda Siochána Act, knowing the disclosure was likely to have a harmful effect.

The 34-year-old was also charged with possession of cocaine at Tullynagracken, north Sligo, on January 16, 2015.

Detective Inspector Jim Delaney told the court he arrested the defendant at Cairns Hill, Sligo, at 10.20am yesterday, and later charged her at Sligo Garda Station.

The court heard the defendant said “no reply” to each of the eight charges put to her and she signed each response.

The detective inspector applied for an adjournment for the preparation of a book of evidence and said that the DPP would be proceeding on indictment.

There was no objection to bail, but, owing to the gravity of the charges, an independent bond of €10,000 would be needed.

The defendant was ordered to surrender her passport, stay in the jurisdiction, and not to interfere with any witness.

The defendant was also told to sign on weekly from 9am to 9pm on a Friday, at Sligo Garda Station.

Defence solicitor Gerry McGovern asked that his client be allowed to make arrangements to collect the passport.

The defendant was released on bail on her own bond of €500 and an independent surety of €10,000 which was put up by her father.

The defendant was remanded to appear on May 12, at Sligo District Court for the preparation of the book of evidence.

Defence solicitor Gerry McGovern successfully applied for legal aid as his client’s income had been reduced to €185 per week.
