Sale of late Cork artist’s paintings to raise money for two worthy causes

An exhibition of paintings by a late Cork artist will also raise funds for two worthy causes.

Bridget Dwyer’s widower Mike said his late wife produced “varied” watercolours that showcased her talent and versatility, and the works on display at the Hazelhurst Gallery Monkstown will be on sale in aid of two charities, including Marymount Hospice.

“Marymount is a very well known charity, and I don’t think there is a person in Cork who hasn’t been out there to visit a loved one, or who hasn’t known someone who has availed of it,” he said.

Paintings sold at the exhibition, which starts tonight at 6pm and runs for 10 days, will also go towards Dogs for the Disabled, a charity that is close to Mike’s heart and was special to his late wife.

“I am quite fond of Dogs for the Disabled, as was Bridget,” Mike said.

Mike has fostered six dogs over the years. The latest, Ivan, is nine months old and will go to a worthy owner when he is around two years old.

“They are mostly matched with children and trained further from there,” Mike said.

Founded in 2007, the Cork-based Dogs for the Disabled receives no government funding, and is mostly comprised of volunteers.

It specially trains assistance dogs to help children and adults with physical disabilities to carry out a range of practical tasks in order to achieve greater independence.

While the dogs offer assistance, they also require exercise and feeding, which in turn encourages their owners to become more outgoing.
