And this year’s beneficiary of the annual ‘Secs in the City’ fundraiser is one which has a long history of providing food for those down on their luck.
Cork Penny Dinners is the charity of choice for secretaries’ day out, which will take place on Friday, April 22, at the Clarion Hotel.
Cork Lions Club president Der Cogan said the day will start with a drinks reception at 12pm, added to by light entertainment in the atrium.
It will be followed by a four-course meal with wine and entertainment, featuring Gerald Kean as master of ceremonies, magician Liam Sheehan, and guest speakers Bibi Baskin and Claire Cullinane.
The latter, also a county councillor, is a leading light in the highly acclaimed Cobh Animation Team. They will present Mna na hÉireann in costumes, plus a women’s perspective of the 1916 Easter Rising.
The fundraising lunch was established in 1981 as the Secretaries’ Day Out, with employers paying for their staff. Since its foundation, the event has helped raise funds for many Cork charities, including Simon, Marymount Hospice, Enable Ireland, the Irish Cancer Society, and Dress for Success.
At a press launch last night, Catriona Twomey of Cork Penny Dinners said she was delighted the charity would be the beneficiary.
Mr Cogan said ‘Secs in the City’ afforded a welcome opportunity for bosses to recognise the achievements and the contribution made by their administrators to the successful running of businesses.
“Their professionalism and commitment can be recognised through this annual event, which provides a welcome break and is really great fun,” he said. “The serious side of the day is that it contributes much needed support through the Lions Club to organisations which provide care within our society.”
