GAA supporters to pay tribute to family that drowned in Buncrana

Dublin GAA fans have offered to pay tribute to those who died in the Donegal drowning tragedy. Supporters’ clubs have organised a tribute to the five family members who died when their car slipped off Buncrana Pier last Sunday evening.

The Dublin footballers play Donegal tonight in the National League, at Croke Park. Their fans have suggested that five minutes into the game there will be a one-minute round of applause.

The tribute will take place at 7.05pm — almost exactly the same time as the tragic event which took the lives of the five, when their AudiQ7 sunk to the bottom of Lough Swilly. Members of various Dublin supporters’ clubs are backing the plan and are asking fans to take part.

A minute’s silence will also precede the game, which throws in at 7pm.

A spokesman for the Dubs Supporters’ Page, on Facebook, said they were appealing to all supporters to take part.

The five who died, Sean McGrotty, 46, and his sons Evan, 12, and Mark, 8, will be laid to rest alongside Sean’s mother-in-law, the boys’ grandmother, Ruth Daniels, 57, and her daughter, Jodi-Lee, 15. Mother and daughter were laid to rest amid heartbreaking scenes in Derry on Thursday.
