The Department of Social Protection is investigating how an internal technical issue meant 73,600 welfare payments were delayed yesterday, with some not likely to be paid until today.

The issue became apparent when weekly payments — mainly illness and disability related payments — did not appear in recipient’s accounts yesterday morning.

According to the Department, of the 73,600 individual bank accounts affected, 30,000 were with AIB, with 23,000 Bank of Ireland customers.
