Two men who played a leading role in campaigning for the marriage equality referendum are among the bookies’ favourites to win the upcoming Cork Person of the Year award.

Arthur Leahy and Kieran Rose, two long-time LGBT activists, could be named the joint winners of the title when the annual awards ceremony takes place in the Rochestown Park Hotel on January 15.

Mr Rose, a civil rights campaigner, played a pivotal role in securing the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland in 1993 and is the current chairman of Glen, the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network.
