Bishop of Cloyne William Crean has criticised the Government’s treatment of the poor, describing homelessness as a scandal and last month’s budget an insult.

In his Christmas message, Bishop Crean said we cannot claim to be a progressive society if we choose to leave so many in poverty.

“The level of homelessness being experienced by so many families is a scandal that cries out for an urgent and immediate response,” he said, stressing that for many families the recession is not over.
