A girl aged 14, who was hospitalised after a wave knocked her and three other teenagers into the sea, has died.

Aoife Winterlich, from Walkinstown in Dublin, never regained consciousness after the incident at Hook Head in Co Wexford and died in hospital in Crumlin yesterday afternoon. The three other teenagers swept into the sea all survived.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit is carrying out a preliminary review of the circumstances of the rescue, which took place last Sunday afternoon after the four scouts were knocked into the water by what was described as a freak wave.
