Derek McIntyre, aged 75, was visibly upset and frail at Cork Circuit Criminal Court where he pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving causing the death of Hilda Cullinane, 44, who was jogging on the hard shoulder of the N25 at Grange, Castlemartyr, Co Cork, on June 22, 2014.

Sergeant John Sharkey said it was a dry, bright, sunny morning and there was no suggestion of any aggravating factor, such as speed by the motorist. He simply failed to take the long sweep of the bend, going in to the hard shoulder where he struck the deceased.
