A young drug addict who was desperate to get some money to buy Christmas presents pulled a knife on shop assistants in two shops in Cork city on the same morning but got away with nothing.

The net effect of sentencing now leaves the accused man facing into three years in jail with another six months suspended.

Peter Matthews, aged 20, formerly of St Vincent’s hostel, Anglesea Terrace, Cork, was sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court his to attempting to rob Daybreak on Anglesea St and Spar on Sullivan’s Quay on December 11, 2014.
