Alan Boohan, aged 34, of Glenogra, Fedamore, Co Limerick, has pleaded not guilty at Limerick Circuit Court to assault causing serious harm to Eoghan O’Callaghan on September 23, 2001.

Mr O’Callaghan has told the trial that Mr Boohan slit his throat as he drove Mr Boohan’s van home after they had attended a party at Buldgaden Castle.

Mr Boohan asked Mr O’Callaghan to drive him and others home as he had too much drink taken.

The accused was sitting directly behind him when he slashed his throat with a blade.

As a result he had to receive 38 staples and seven internal stitches at Limerick Regional Hospital.

Thomas Ryan told the second day of the trial that he had been at the party and got home at around 3.30am to Fedamore village.

As he drove in, he saw Mr O’Callaghan outside his front gate. On approaching, he saw blood coming from a slash wound across his throat.

He said: “There was an amount of blood and the skin was hanging down like an open letterbox. It was fairly graphic.”

Mr Ryan put Mr O’Callaghan straight into his car and drove him to the regional hospital in Limerick.

During the journey, Mr O’Callaghan went in and out of consciousness, and did not realise the seriousness of the situation, the court heard.

Mr Ryan added: “His throat was wide open.”

Cross-examined by Brian McInerney, defending, he agreed that Mr O’Callaghan came to his house in 2006 after another incident in which a passenger in his car died.

Michael Hedderman told the trial he was one of the passengers in Mr Boohan’s van being driven by Mr O’Callaghan.

The accused was sitting behind the driver.

After they got out of the van in Fedamore he saw blood coming from Mr O’Callaghan’s throat.

He had no idea how this wound was caused.

John O’Sullivan, prosecuting, said the State’s case was concluded and the trial went into legal argument.

The trial continues.
