Three Sisters say culture capital title would ‘transform’ the South-East

The “Three Sisters” of Waterford, Wexford, and Kilkenny have put together one of four Irish applications to be named capital of culture in 2020. An adjuducation process will determine which city or region will go forward to the European shortlisting stage next month.

The Mayor of Waterford, John Cummins; the Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Mary Hilda Cavanagh; and the Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council Tony Dempsey gathered at the weekend to f0rmally submit the Three Sisters European Capital of Culture 2020 “bid book”.

The submission tells the story of the region’s plans if the 2020 title is bestowed.

It outlines details of the regional profile, the vision of the region for the year of 2020, the region’s cultural strategy and creative programme, and the artistic and cultural make up of Kilkenny, Waterford, and Wexford.

Bid director Michael Quinn said that the 80-page bid book includes “lots of passionate ideas and suggestions” submitted by members of public during the Three Sisters public consultation period through social media and an interactive website.

“It is wonderful to see so many different names and faces and the huge appetite and commitment, which was demonstrated in the various submissions,” he said.

He said the Three Sisters regional proposition is “entirely different to the other three Irish bids of Limerick, Galway, and Dublin”.

“The region’s three councils have been working together since mid-2014 to transform the regional vision through culture and the European Capital of Culture bid.

“The awarding of the 2020 title would have a transformative effect on the Three Sisters region and the bid book emphasises the impact that this title would actually have, the legacy it would leave including a huge boost to the economy through increased visitor numbers, an enhanced cultural infrastructure, a very distinctive regional brand, an increase in the region’s civic pride, an increased visibility on the European stage, and much stronger partnerships.”
