Adrian Crevan Mackin charged with being in IRA

Adrian Crevan Mackin’s Facebook profile is not unlike that of many other lads in their mid-twenties: A picture of a BMW car, photos of him on the beach with a dog.

Unlike his contemporaries, Mackin mixed the mundane with the murderous. Earlier this year he appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin charged with IRA membership.

Aged 24, he was from Rosstrevor, Co Down, but locals say he had been living in Omeath for at least two years. It is understood he is the father of two children with the woman he shot.

He had studied at the Southern Regional College in Newry and worked in a branch of Hollister, but locals were unsure whether he had been working lately. It is also believed his parents have been living abroad.

On January 18, Mackin was brought before a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court and charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise the IRA, on Friday, January 16.

Det Garda Ciaran Hobbs gave evidence of his arrest, charge, and caution at the Crescent, Dundalk. He was remanded to appear in court on a later date and was granted bail.

It is understood Mackin had been questioned on earlier occasions about dissident activity and that his arrest came after searches were carried out in Dundalk and Newry as part of a joint Garda/PSNI investigation. His case was due back before the special court for mention on October 27.

In 2012, Mackin, then of Craigaveen Close, Newry, appeared before a magistrates’ court on charges of possessing 23 “extreme pornographic images” showing women having sex with animals. He later pleaded guilty to the charge at Newry Courthouse and was given a custodial sentence of four years’ imprisonment, suspended for a year.
