Joan Burton: We’re ready for election at any time

Labour leader Joan Burton has said her party is “ready for an election at any time” amid ongoing speculation that Taoiseach Enda Kenny may be about to call a snap November vote.

Joan Burton: We’re ready for election at any time

Despite continuing to seek a Spring poll as it is “best for the people of the country” and that she wants to “see the work of the Government completed”, the Tánaiste told reporters the junior coalition partner will not be caught out should the early election be sought.

“The Labour party is ready for an election at any time. I’ve indicated my preference over a long time that I would like to see the work of the Government completed. But at the end of the day, constitutionally, obviously this is a decision for the Taoiseach in the Irish constitution. We have a lot of work to do and I’d like to see that work completed. But I’m very conscious that we need to do whatever is best for the people in the country, but we’re ready for an election at any time,” she said.
