A severe weather alert remains in place today after torrential rain sparked localised flash flooding, leading to the cancellation or postponement of a number of sporting fixtures — most notably Listowel Races.

Wild weather along the Atlantic Way

Weather warnings were issued to motorists to take extra care, including alerts about conditions in parts of Connemara and Kerry with drivers being told to travel in exceptional circumstances only.

Among the worst-hit areas was Clifden, where the Sky Road was closed following a landslide and Beach Road was shut due to flooding, as was the R379 road between Cleggan Cross and Cleggan Village and the N59 from Clifden to Letterfrack.
