Man dies after meeting intruders

Gardaí received a call shortly after 1.30pm yesterday and found the man at the side of the driveway of his house in Toomaline on the outskirts of Doon in Co Limerick.

It’s understood he had just returned home with his sister when they were confronted by intruders. The man collapsed and died. Parish priest Tony Ryan was called to the scene.

“He was a thorough gentleman, a most intelligent and inoffensive person and I want to extend my sympathy to all his family,” said Fr Ryan.

He lived at the house with his sister, a retired nurse.

Two people were arrested and they are being held at Henry Street Garda Station.

The house was sealed off and the office of the State Pathologist has been notified.

It’s understood there were a number of other break-ins in the Cappamore and Doon areas on the same day.

Anyone with information is asked to Bruff Garda station on 061 382 940.
