The man who died in a Mayo road accident last night has been named as footballer Darragh Doherty. The 19-year-old from Kilmaine, Co Mayo, died after the car he was driving struck a wall on the N84 at Carrowmore, near Ballinrobe at around 10.30pm last night.
A man who sustained serious head trauma in a vicious street assault in Limerick this morning has been placed in an induced coma "to prevent swelling in his brain", Gardaí said. Officers investigating the assault around 1am, said the injured man, who is aged in his early 30s, is in a serious but stable condition at Cork University Hospital.
Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has said that the IRA does not exist, and will not be reconvening in future. Deputy Ó Caoláin was responding to calls by Environment Minister Alan Kelly on party President Gerry Adams to clarify that the organisation had fully disbanded.
