A 58-year-old man has died after a serious assault in Kildare on Saturday night gardaí said.

One man was arrested at the scene in Sarto Park in Naas.

The victim, named locally as Patsy ‘Bud’ Kelly, was taken to Naas General Hospital where he later died. He was described as well known and a well-liked figure in the Naas and Newbridge areas.

The 35-year-old suspect is being held at Naas Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

“The scene is currently preserved and the coroner has been notified,” said a Garda spokesperson.

The Twitter account of Naas Parish posted its condolences following the incident tweeting: “Our prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends of Patsy ‘Bud’ Kelly who died last night. May he rest in peace.”

Mayor of Naas councillor James Lawless said the man was “a well known and well- liked character” in the town and offered his sympathies to the man’s family and friends. “I was only speaking to him last week. It is shocking that he met his end in such a violent way,” he told The Journal.
