Gardaí question man after mother, daughter stabbed
It is understood that the mother, who is in her 40s, suffered serious stab wounds to her neck, and that her daughter suffered stab wounds to a hand when she tried to stop the attack on her mother during the incident in Cobh, Co Cork.
The alarm was raised just before 11am after the incident unfolded in a house on Cooline Avenue, in the Ballyvoloon area of the town.
Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the estate and arrested a man in his 50s at the scene.
Paramedics treated the injured women at the house before both were rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.
The mother’s injuries were initially described as serious but her condition was later listed as stable. Her daughter’s injuries were described as relatively minor.
The man, arrested on suspicion of assault, was detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, and was taken to Cobh Garda Station where he was still being questioned last night.
Gardaí sealed off the house and preserved the scene for a detailed technical examination by forensic experts.
They also conducted door-to-door inquiries in the area to establish if anyone heard or saw anything suspicious.
Yesterday’s incident comes just eight months after husband and wife, Michael and Valerie Greaney, both died after a stabbing incident at their family home in Cobh on December 28.
