Charges dropped against couple in crash with gardaí

Charges against a couple, accused of lying to the Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC), were yesterday struck out by a judge who criticised some garda witnesses.

The case followed a collision in which a family car and a private car driven by an off-duty garda, were both written off.

Maeve O’Brien, aged 42, and Fintan O’Brien, aged 45, from Carne, Castletown-Geoghegan, Mullingar, Co Westmeath claimed their car was stationary when a car driven by off-duty Garda Mark Kenny, who had been accompanied by a colleague Garda Ciaran McCormack, crashed into it. The two gardaí had claimed the exact opposite.
